The most common causes of long menstrual periods are idiopathic irregular menstrual cycle, idiopathic excessive menstruation, and idiopathic painful menstruation. Other possible causes, such as vaginitis, are more rare.
Within all the people who go to their doctor with long menstrual periods, 39% report having painful menstruation, 34% report having heavy menstrual flow, and 28% report having vaginal discharge.
Patients with long menstrual periods often receive hematologic tests, pelvis exam, urinalysis, standard pregnancy test, examination of breast, complete physical skin exam performed (ml), ultrasonography and chlamydia test .
The most commonly prescribed drugs for patients with long menstrual periods include medroxyprogesterone, ortho cyclen, portia, clomiphene (clomid), modicon, drospirenone / ethinyl estradiol, adapalene topical, nonoxynol 9 topical, ethinyl estradiol / norelgestromin, norethindrone (loestrin fe), desogestrel / ethinyl estradiol, progesterone and benzoyl peroxide topical .
Groups of people at highest risk for long menstrual periods include age 30-44 years, sex == female and age 15-29 years. On the other hand, age 75+ years, sex == male, age 1-4 years, and age < 1 years almost never get long menstrual periods.
