What causes it?

The most common causes of ankle pain are sprain or strain, fracture of the ankle, and injury of the ankle. Other possible causes, such as fracture of the foot, are more rare.

What symptoms are related?

Within all the people who go to their doctor with ankle pain, 51% report having foot or toe pain, 50% report having ankle swelling, and 36% report having knee pain.

Patients with ankle pain often receive radiographic imaging procedure, plain x-ray, application of splint, physical therapy exercises, examination of foot, orthopedic casting, traction; splints; and other wound care and bone density scan .

Common Medications

The most commonly prescribed drugs for patients with ankle pain include methyl salicylate-menthol topical, liotrix (thyrolar), aspirin / caffeine / propoxyphene, posaconazole, fluticasone, tapentadol (nucynta), deferoxamine, acetaminophen / caffeine / dihydrocodeine, isopropyl alcohol topical and dexbrompheniramine / pseudoephedrine .

Who is at risk?

Groups of people at highest risk for ankle pain include age 5-14 years. On the other hand, age < 1 years almost never get ankle pain.
