Ankylosing spondylitis

Also known as Rheumatoid Spondylitis, Marie Strumpell Disease, Bechterew Disease, and

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS, from Greek ankylos, crooked; spondylos, vertebrae; -itis, inflammation), previously known as Bechterew's disease, (or syndrome) and Marie-Strümpell disease, is a chronic inflammatory disease of the axial skeleton with variable involvement of peripheral joints and nonarticular structures. AS is a form of spondyloarthritis, a chronic, inflammatory arthritis where immune mechanisms are thought to have a key role. It mainly affects joints in the spine and the sacroiliac joint in the pelvis, and can cause eventual fusion of the spine.

What are the symptoms?

Within all the people who go to their doctor with ankylosing spondylitis, 74% report having back pain, 72% report having low back pain, and 57% report having hip pain. The symptoms that are highly suggestive of ankylosing spondylitis are hip pain and stiffness all over, although you may still have ankylosing spondylitis without those symptoms.

Common Medications

The most commonly prescribed drugs for patients with ankylosing spondylitis include triamcinolone topical product, infliximab (remicade), methotrexate, bupivacaine, mepivacaine (carbocaine), etanercept (enbrel), piroxicam, tizanidine, sulfasalazine, iohexol (omnipaque), indomethacin, ethanol (on guard) and adalimumab (humira) .

Who is at risk?

Groups of people at highest risk for ankylosing spondylitis include age 60-74 years age 45-59 years. On the other hand, age < 1 years almost never get ankylosing spondylitis.
